The English Department is delighted to announce that Professor Ashley Brown of the University of Wisconsin will be speaking on campus about the tennis legend, Althea Gibson, perhaps the most famous Black sportswoman of the mid-twentieth century. She will be speaking Thursday, April 23, at 4:30, in the Fiondella Great Room in Ruane.
Professor Brown recently wrote an award-winning biography of Gibson, setting her life against the background of the Great Migration, Jim Crow racism, the integration of American sports, the Civil Rights movement, the Cold War, and second wave feminism. The flyer provides more details. Spread the word!
