This program explores the long-existing presence of people of African descent on the European continent. Students will investigate how pivotal moments of French and Portuguese history have shaped contemporary understandings of Blackness in western Europe. An interdisciplinary focus on the history, experiences, and presence of people of African descent in these countries will help us understand how language, race, and identity reveal complex iterations of Blackness in Europe.
Contact Dr. Wheeler (ewheele4@providence.edu) or Dr. Fall (afall1@providence.edu) with questions.
