Drop in for our lunchtime lecture, “Why Disability Matters to the Humanities and the Arts,” by Dr. Licia Carlson, TODAY, 10/24/2024, from 12 to 1:30 in Moore Hall Room 122.
Many people associate disability with disciplines like education, psychology, law, medicine, and the health sciences. However, there is a vast and vibrant body of work exploring disability in other fields, including philosophy, history, literature, and the arts. By sharing some examples from philosophy and the performing arts, Dr. Carlson will show why including disability — as a concept, a cultural identity, and a lived experience — is necessary for disability justice in higher education and beyond.
Dr. Carlson studies the philosophy of disability, bioethics, feminist philosophy, the philosophy of music, and 20th century Continental philosophy. Dr. Carlson was named the Outstanding Faculty Scholar for 2024 at Providence College. The award is presented to a tenured faculty member who demonstrates the highest standards in research, scholarship, and contributions to their field.
