Wednesday, February 19, 4-5pm in Ruane Center for the Humanities, Room 206.

Some Group Theory and the (2x2x2) Rubik’s Cube
Charles Daly, Ph.D.
Brown University

In this talk we’ll analyze the group structure of the 2x2x2 Rubik’s cube by discussing invariants of the group and break the group into smaller more comprehensible pieces. We’ll motivate the discussion through examples and provide the audience with illustrations to explore the group structure of this beloved mathematical object. This talk is intended for a broad audience and does not require a background in group theory. All are welcome!
Charles Daly is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Brown University. He received his PhD from the University of Maryland. His research interests revolve around geometric structures on manifolds (abstract shapes), specifically rigidity results. He also does animations and visualization of mathematical objects—see his website for some cool pictures!
